As a child of about five I remember playing with my friend in an area on the edge of our garden where a pile of gravel had been left as surplus after the completion of our driveway. This heap of stone became for us the means in which we were able to construct our own surroundings through the curiosity of the hands touch.
I remember this day as my first taste of disappointment, in my preoccupation in conceiving of the outer shell of our shelter, my imagination had provided me with an illusion that the inner shell would follow suit: though it was only my mind that could enter a space that reality had deemed to be filled.
About The Artist
My concerns as an artist then are still preoccupied by the exploration of surface, as every surface conceals another. It is this enduring curiosity of a concealment, a façade, but also of a capturing of an essence that fascinates me. Just as a mirror is shut off space, I relate to the objects that I make as material belying space; solid/hollow structures that are both an entrapment yet also a description. My sculpture’s seem to me to evoke a frozen moment, an account of character of a thing that no longer remains, like an unmoving epitaph of object.
I seek to mould experiential sensations through the exploitation of a particular quality within a chosen object. I re-make these objects into things that can be touched, stroked, held and perceived in a deeply sculptural way, usually utilising the simplicity of one material, that in some way relates to the characteristics of the feeling I am trying to evoke, yet is also bound to an origin of a domestic setting/function.
I run after object’s shadows in an attempt to discover their particular ‘truth‘. I try to solidify phenomenon so that in reflection the object dissipates, becoming a new account of itself, while still enveloped by its former nature.
